Setting up Your MySQL Account
MySQL is a relational database
server that understands SQL (Structured Query Language) queries. The actual server
software resides on a server separate from your Web site server. MySQL can be
used to store data for convenient retrieval. For more information see (http:///www.mysql.com/information)
MySQL utilizes client-server technology. A number of different clients
may be used to connect to the server to input, update or retrieve data. One of
the most useful tools that can be used is a program or CGI script that will run
on your Web server. The CGI script may be written in C or in Perl. Perl, however,
is recommended because it is convenient and widely used.
A number of
different clients can even be utilized through multiple connections from your
home or office workstation. MySQL (http://www.mysql.com)
provides a DOS based client and there are a number of Windows based clients as
well as Unix.
Setting up your MySQL database
You must first
create an account for yourself on the MySQL server. This will create a user for
you on that server and set up a password. A unique database (named the same as
your username) will also be created at this time. After this step, you will have
a database and you will have access but you will not have any tables.
